TOURNAMENT Rules & Regulations

 

 
  • The Tournament Director reserves the right to combine divisions where he sees fit.
  • All contestants must wear a clean, white karate gi.
  • Toenails and fingernails must be trimmed short.
  • No footpad, wrapped bandages or any metallic objects may be worn. 
  • Shin guards for children 14 years old and under is okay.  All others not allowed.
  • Mouthpiece and groin protector are mandatory in all kumite matches. 
  • Female chest guard protectors are optional.
  • Only fabric or WKF type fist guards allowed in all kumite matches. 
  • Head protector optional.
  • Only safety glasses with a restraining band or soft contact lenses are allowed.  All other types of eyewear are not acceptable.

KATA RULES

  • All Contestants must perform a Japanese or Okinawan Kata.
  • Beginner and Intermediate levels must perform basic katas such as:  Heian,  Pinan, Gekisai, Tioshi Shodan, Konchabo or other similarly categorized katas.
  • Black belts and brown belts may perform any advance kata.
  • In case of ties, beginners may perform the same kata. All others must perform a different kata.

 

SATURDAY:  IPPON SHOBU KUMITE RULES

 

  • Ippon Sho Bu:  One full-point (Ippon) or two half-points (Waza Ari)
  • 2-minute non-contact bouts, clock is @ running time

 

SUNDAY:  NIHON SHOBU KUMITE RULES

BLACK BELT FINALS

  • Nihon Sho Bu:  Two full-points, One full-point and two half-points, or four half-points
  • 3-minute non-contact bouts, clock is @ running time

 

IPPON & NIHON SHOBU CONTACT RULES

 

  • A technique thrown to the head that misses but passes through the target by at least one fist will be called a contact even if it does not physically hit the target.  The penalty is KEIKOKU, no points awarded

  • Any contact to the groin or head area one time will result in a warning (KEIKOKU), no point awarded

  • A second contact to the head or groin area will result in HANSOKU CHUI, and the opponent will be awarded a waza ari or one-half (½) point

  • A third contact will result in disqualification or HANSOKU

  • Depending on the severity of the contact, a contestant may be penalized ½-point or immediately disqualified from the match

  • Excessive contact to any area of the body will result in disqualification by judge and referee’s decision

  • Any blood resulting from excessive contact will result in immediate disqualification by judge and referee's decision

  • Light controlled contact to the body is permissible

  • Face skin touch in adult black belt divisions only.

 

JOGAI RULES: STEPPING OUT OF BOUNDS

 

  • 1st time out of bounds will result in a warning – KEIKOKU.  No point awarded

  • 2nd time out of bounds will result in HANSOKU CHUI with the opponent being awarded one-half (½) point.

  • Stepping out of bounds a 3rd time will result in loss of the match - HANSOKU

 

 

WKF KUMITE RULES

  • Contestants may use red, blue, or white WKF type fist guards only.
  • Mouthpiece and groin protector (male) mandatory.
  • Head & shin guard: 14 years & below is optional.
  • Chest guard for all female competitors is optional.
  • 2-minutes running time for all 17 years & under.
  • 3-minutes running time for all adult divisions.
  • Skin touch allowed only in Black Belt Adult divisions.

POINT CRITERIA

  • Ippon: 1-point awarded for chudan or jodan punch/strike
  • Nihon: 2-points awarded for kicks to the body, punch to the back, combination hand techniques the individual components of which score in their own right, unbalancing an opponent and scoring.
  • Sanbon: 3-points awarded for kicks to the face/head area, sweeping/throwing the opponent to the mat followed by a scoring technique.

PENALTY CATEGORIES

  • Category-1 Penalty:  Excessive contact, contact to the throat, deliberate attack to the arms, legs, groin, joints and instep, open hand attack to the face, dangerous/forbidden throwing techniques causing injury to the opponent.
  • Category-2 Penalty:  Faking or exaggerating an injury, jogai (out of bounds), mubobi (lack of defense), grabbing and attempting to throw without first executing a genuine attack, pushing, uncontrolled techniques, attack with the head/knee/elbow, talking to or goading the opponent, failing to follow the referee’s order, and discourteous behavior.

 

KOBUDO RULES

  • Loss of control shall result in disqualification.
  • All weapons subject to inspection by officials.
  • Bo or staff must be at least one-fist distance from the top of the head of the contestant.

 

DIVISION CATEGORIES

  • Beginner: 7 Kyu and under
  • Intermediate: 6 , 5 , and 4 Kyu
  • Brown Belt: 3 Kyu, 2 Kyu, and 1 Kyu
  • Advance: black and brown belts combined
  • Black Belt: black belts only

 

USE OF VIDEO CAMERA

No video or still cameras allowed in all Seminars

Only official photographer and videographer can take photos and videos at Seminars

 No others permitted

Videotaping and picture taking is okay on Saturday

A VIDEO PASS IS REQUIRED DURING SUNDAY’S FINALS

No one is allowed to take videos without a video pass

Our staff will strictly enforce this rule

Video Passes may be purchased ONLINE or at the Tournament Site
